The Program of Switches
By Mercedes Mészáros |
According
to its basic idea, the Program of Switches deals with young people,
17-30 years of age being in custody or being arrested, for prevention
of relapse, completed with education of a secondary school.
The first
step of the re-socialization of the young people is the continuous
learning and the emotional support - these enlarge their chances
in life and anticipate the possibility of a relatively healthy,
useful a happy life. The
main aim is to change the negative self-image, to develop and stabilize
the personality, to enhance of knowledge, to strengthen the social
relations - and through all these to support the integration into
the society. An other aim is to discover the (psychological, mental,
social and socio-cultural) reasons of criminal deed, and to find
the field of re-integration. This
continuity and emotional stability later the field of after-care
is the Belvárosi Tanoda. Its inceptive community gives the chance
for the re-start. The
Program of Switches started in May 1997, when 2 students of the
Tanoda got into custody. The connection was not interrupted with
them even in this special case; they were supported in this life
situation as well. Later on 12 young people were supported and treated
by helpers of the Tanoda. In 1999 started the secondary school education
of young people being in custody or being arrested. This education
was based on a specially worked out supportive program aimed at
personality development. The experiences of this work were summarized
in an article in Prison Review. In
January 2002 the Program has connection with six penal institutions.
The
Program of Switches has a close connection with Stop Group. Both
groups have specific problems of its own, but there are meeting
points as well: the criminal career is many times parallel with
drug use and vice versa. According
to ethos of the Tanoda the connecting to the Program is determined
by the needs manifested in life situation or mental attitude.
The 5-6 members of the Program's team deals with 15-20 young people
with criminal career. The helpers spend 3 hours/week in the prison
with their "students". They spend these occasions with
conversations and learning. The
Program in many points differs from the other programs of the Tanoda:
first of all, the helpers visit the students and not the students
go to the Tanoda; the communication in written form is emphasized.
The release
means a point of crisis in the case of students of Program. An other
crisis is to live with the crime committed in the past, punished
by the society.
Learning is a mean of conversation; it is a part of the helping
relation and process.
The young people can meet their skills and possibilities, and according
to these the make decisions - that is the most important result
of this work. The
theoretical approach of this program is followed by some precise
case studies. |
